Southern Africa

Southern Africa plays a vital role in the conservation of many of Africa's iconic species, not least the rhino.

There are only around 27,000 rhinos left in the wild, with by far the largest wild population found in the Kruger National Park in South Africa, which also borders Mozambique and Zimbabwe.

WildAid has launched its "Poaching Steals From Us All" campaign in South Africa, Mozambique and Zimbabwe, using celebrity ambassadors to spread the word through video,  radio, billboards and social media. Our messages stress the negative effects of poaching, highlight the importance of wildlife as part of Africa's natural heritage and also aim to promote domestic and regional tourism.

WildAid has joined with partners in Mozambique and Zimbabwe in "conservation outreach" programs where we have donated food packs to impoverished communities around conservation areas that have been adversely affected by COVID-19 and the collapse of conservation-based tourism.

WildAid is embarking on a campaign with Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services to persuade inmates to turn away from wildlife crime, and is looking at using former prisoners in outreach and rehabilitation programs to communities living near conservation areas.

In South Africa, WildAid is about to launch a new campaign "Give Cheetahs Some Space," highlighting their dwindling numbers and the threat from the illegal pet trade.
